Travis AFB (JLUS)

Abstract

In 2013, the Air Force nominated Travis AFB as a candidate for the Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) program. The JLUS is a cooperative, community-driven planning process to promote compatible civilian development in support of military readiness and defense capabilities, while also supporting continued community economic development and public health, safety, and general welfare. Travis AFB is comprised of 6,495 acres located in Solano County, CA, and serves as a critical Air Force air mobility connection hub. The 60th Air Mobility Wing, the Air Force’s largest air mobility organization, is the host unit. Solano County serves as the local sponsor for the JLUS project and will organize various jurisdictions and stakeholders for the JLUS planning effort. The final JLUS will contain recommended strategies to help facilitate compatible uses between the community and the military. The participating jurisdictions and Travis AFB plan to use the JLUS to guide interaction between local jurisdictions and the military on future projects, as well as manage internal planning processes with a compatibility based approach. It is through the future actions of the stakeholders involved and their ability to implement that the JLUS strategies may become a reality.
