Southern California AMP (DIA)

Abstract

The State of California, Governor’s Office of Planning and Research is applying for assistance to carry out a program providing community planning assistance and economic diversification in the Southern California region—comprised of the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura, San Diego and Orange. Over the past three years, the WARN Act Notices show 3,558 jobs have been lost by aerospace and defense companies in this region. The program described in this proposal will provide immediate and sustained assistance to Southern California workers and firms impacted by reduced defense procurement. The Southern California region formed a consortium, the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership for Southern California (AMP SoCal), to provide aerospace and defense manufacturers with the tools, a trained workforce, and capacity to master the future. In recognition of the value of the AMP SoCal vision, the Department of Commerce selected AMP SoCal on June 23rd as one of the 12 designated “Manufacturing Communities” as part of the first Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership (IMCP) cohort. The USC Center for Economic Development is the Lead Co-Applicant for AMP SoCal and will act as manager of the community planning and economic diversification efforts.
