Fort Campbell (Force Reduction)

Abstract

In a joint effort, the Kentucky and Tennessee region surrounding Fort Campbell seeks to undertake a multi-phased integrated effort to clearly identify and assess the impact of military personnel reductions while developing a long-term economic diversification and growth plan that reduces the region’s reliance on Fort Campbell. As with the loss of any major employer, job and income losses with the resulting damage to the local economy tend to become the central focus; communities often address short term fiscal and economic impacts with “band-aid” approaches, but often lose sight of long-term solutions for economic needs. The hard decisions of addressing the impacts, developing a road to recovery, and implementing a plan for diversification of the economic base primarily falls on leaders in the public policy realm. The purpose of the overall proposal is to not only address short term fiscal, economic and social impacts of the reduction of troops, but to develop a long term road to recovery and diversification of the economic base of the region surrounding Fort Campbell. This will be completed through a series of phased projects in conjunction with the region and the Office of Economic Adjustment.
