Abstract

Under this grant, the Commonwealth of Virginia will assist defense contractors develop adjustment and implementation strategies. Companies will be provided training and specific services to assist them with business development, and expansion. The Commonwealth is also providing regional programs to work with individuals and businesses on job placement and entrepreneurship. This grant will fund the development of a transition pilot program which will include a website used by the region to promote and provide business and career transition services to impacted defense contractors and their workers. This innovative concept to address the unique needs of defense contractors by creating a sector-specific transition program has not been funded by other federal workforce programs. To address entrepreneurship the grant supports the development of a program to offer to defense contractors considering entrepreneurship personalized guidance through mentoring, business counseling, and access to key leaders, resources, and programs. In addition in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia a program will focus on helping companies overcome the challenging barriers associated with moving from a reliance on government spending to pursue more robust commercial markets for their products and services. Additionally, the Commonwealth will procure professional services to develop a unified approach to carry out statewide Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) recommendations. This effort will lay the groundwork for a statewide effort to carry out the relevant JLUS recommendations for the NAS Oceania, Langley AFB, Fort Lee, Fort AP Hill, NSF Dahlgren, and MCB Quantico.
