Gulfport NCBC (JLUS)
Abstract
The Gulf Regional Planning Commission, created in 1962 under MS Code 17-1-29 as a general planning organization comprising the three Mississippi coastal counties and twelve cities, is the study sponsor and grant administrator, in partnership with Hancock and Harrison counties, the cities of Gulfport and Long Beach, and NCBC Gulfport. NCBC Gulfport is located in Gulfport, MS with borders along the City of Long Beach and Harrison County. NCBC Gulfport hosts numerous tenant commands and provides both facilities and training sites on the main installation and at several Special Areas spread across Hancock and Harrison counties. Community development issues include encroaching urban development in proximity to the military areas of influence, resulting in concerns related to range safety and noise, and competition for water, land and air within a limited training area. Project deliverables will include a regional JLUS Final Report and Implementation Plan, including components for the three management areas, a Stakeholder and Public Engagement Plan, and a JLUS Project Overview for public distribution.
