Schofield Barracks/Fort Shafter (Force Reduction)

Abstract

The City and County of Honolulu are requesting a Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment grant to conduct an initial assessment to identify and understand the community impacts associated with the announced military personnel reductions at Schofield Barracks and Fort Shafter. In July 2015, the United States Army announced military personnel reductions of 1,443 within Untied States Army Garrison Hawaii which include Schofield Barracks and Fort Shafter. These two installations serve as a significant economic engine for the region and the Army reductions are likely to have significant impact on the region’s economy. This grant will assist the City and County of Honolulu in organizing community stakeholders and conducting a Community Impact Analysis/Assessment to gain a better understanding of the impacts of the proposed reductions in order to guide future planning efforts with emphasis on small business, schools, housing, and other island impacts.
