Camp Crowder (JLUS)

Abstract

The Harry S. Truman Coordinating Council is serving as the sponsor for the Camp Crowder Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) project, in partnership with the Cities of Neosho and Goodman, Newton and McDonald Counties and other affected stakeholders. The proposed project is intended to carry out the recommendations from the April 2014 JLUS. The JLUS represents a community-driven planning process among Camp Crowder and the surrounding communities to: Promote compatible civilian development in support of military readiness and defense capabilities; Protect public health, safety, welfare, quality of life; Promote the economic viability of the communities; Foster continued communication among Camp Crowder and the surrounding communities to address compatibility issues. The proposed 18-month project to carry out the JLUS recommendations will include the following deliverables: Establish a Joint Land Use Working Group; Develop communication, coordination and outreach strategies; Promote compatible business and economic development; Develop land conservation and protection strategies; Amend the 2006 City of Neosho Comprehensive Plan to incorporate the 2014 JLUS recommendations; Develop a Comprehensive Plan for the City of Goodman to promote compatible development around Camp Crowder; Create a Military Compatibility Overlay Zone for the Cities of Neosho and Goodman; Develop Military Land Use Compatibility Districts for Newton and McDonald Counties.
