Fort Sill

Abstract

The Association of South Central Oklahoma Governments (ASCOG) is serving as the sponsor for the Fort Sill Regional Joint Land Use Study (JLUS), in partnership with Fort Sill and representatives from the City of Lawton; the City of Elgin; the Town of Fletcher; the Town of Sterling; the Town of Medicine Park; the City of Cache; the City of Geronimo; and the Town of Indiahoma; as well as Comanche County; Jackson County; and Kiowa County. It will also include stakeholder participation from Sheppard AFB, Texas; Tinker AFB, Oklahoma; and Altus AFB, Oklahoma due to their training missions on Fort Sill. The JLUS represents a community-driven planning process among Fort Sill and the surrounding communities to: ? Promote compatible civilian development in support of military readiness and defense capabilities; ? Protect public health, safety, welfare, quality of life; ? Promote the economic viability of the communities; and ? Foster continued communication among Fort Sill and the surrounding communities to address compatibility issues. The study area will include a 25-mile radius around the installation. The JLUS planning process will benefit both the military installation and its supporting communities by identifying areas where future land use conflicts might occur, and where mitigation strategies, ordinances, and future planning can be employed to counter possible incompatible civilian development. JLUS project deliverables will include the JLUS Final Report and Implementation Plan, Public Participation Plan, and JLUS Project Overview for public distribution.
