Abstract

Texas seeks to mitigate the impact of defense spending and sequestration on the state economy through identification and assistance to affected businesses, creation of analyses to aid economic planning for affected regions, and facilitation of high-impact entrepreneurship and technology acceleration activities in those regions. Texas seeks a grant from the Office of Economic Adjustment, under the Defense Industry Adjustment program to accomplish the following Phase I activities: (A) Supply Chain and Asset Mapping (B) Assistance to Supply Chain Companies, supported by TMAC and Small Business Development Center (SBDC) (C) Advanced Technology Acceleration, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship, based on the proven and highly impactful Mass Challenge model Texas seeks to mitigate the impact of defense spending and sequestration on the state economy through identification and assistance to affected businesses, creation of analyses to aid economic planning for affected regions, and facilitation of high-impact entrepreneurship and technology acceleration activities in those regions. Texas enjoys a diversified economy, but still has over-reliance on defense expenditures (along with oil and gas). The DIA funding presents an opportunity for Texas to both leverage capabilities developed within aerospace-defense industries into adjacent economic activities. Texas expects to ensure large scale impact on jobs, wages, and investment.
