State of Utah - Mountain West Manufacturing

Abstract

This program will create a new manufacturing platform in our nation that will advance economic and workforce resilience in response to changes in Defense spending. Specifically, this project focuses on networking past, present, and potential Defense-supported metals manufacturers in the states of Utah and Colorado directly with advanced manufacturing research and development centers via a centralized, artificially intelligent database. This platform will enable Defense manufacturing contractors to efficiently use additive manufacturing (AM) processes (a.k.a. ?3D printing?) to shorten product development cycles, expand their product mix, enter new non-Defense related markets and, thus, increase economic diversification of their business, and thereby increasing economic and workforce resilience. This program benefits the DoD and more specifically Defense manufacturers to efficiently employ AM processes to expand their product offerings, to expand into new non-Defense related markets, and to provide resilient employment and value to society independent of Defense spending levels. Further, the program will benefit the state of Utah and the state of Colorado through the economic benefits derived from the contract both directly and indirectly. There are a large number of companies throughout the state of Utah that draw their primary support from Defense contracts. In the same way, DoD spending is a significant component of Colorado?s economy. A reduction in DoD spending in these regions can greatly affect the economies in both states.
