Bethesda NNMC Maryland
Abstract
The September 2005 Department of Defense ?Base Closure and Realignment Report? recommended the relocation of all tertiary medical services from Walter Reed Army Medical Center to the National Naval Medical Center establishing it as the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda (WRNMMCB) on the campus of Naval Support Activity - Bethesda (NSAB.) This DOD action brought an additional 3,600 employees (a 45% increase) to the NSAB campus. Visitors to the campus have doubled to nearly 1,000,000 per year. This increase in mission growth has exacerbated existing traffic conditions. Montgomery County, Maryland is seeking a grant from the Office of Economic Adjustment to continue its community assistance efforts in response to mission growth at WRNMMCB. This grant would continue to provide for a full-time Military Installations Coordinator in Montgomery County, Maryland, whose purpose is to assist the community impacted by mission growth and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders within various levels of government and the general public, thereby assisting the Department of Defense in providing ?world class? care at WRNMMCB. This position will manage grant funds; perform intra- and inter-governmental coordination with multiple local, state, and Federal agencies regarding five BRAC-related transportation improvement projects; and serve as liaison to numerous communities impacted by transportation improvement projects at WRNMMCB.
