Colorado Springs Region (DIA)

Abstract

With five military installations and hundreds of defense contractors and suppliers, the Pikes Peak region of Colorado?located in the Colorado Springs, Colorado MSA?is heavily dependent on defense spending. This poses a significant risk to the region?s economy, especially when defense spending reductions occur. According to contractors, direct and indirect job losses are particularly acute in the Information Technology sector. The Pikes Peak Regional Defense Assistance Program (PPRDAP) is designed to assist defense contractors to: 1) Enter the cybersecurity arena, 2) Expand their cybersecurity offerings to non-defense government and commercial cybersecurity offerings, 3) Assist the region?s commercial cybersecurity companies? expansion, and 4) Create a cybersecurity labor pool that will allow those companies to have success in the cybersecurity arena. DoD will benefit from these diversification efforts by increasing the strength and resilience of businesses and industries in the region, and the overall strength of the local economy. By providing market diversification, this project increases economic resiliency and competitive position on cybersecurity for the region and maintains capability among firms and suppliers during future fluctuations in defense spending. Additionally, this project helps to develop and cultivate cyber defense postures to strengthen DoD s cyber defense as well as the region s ability to defend against potential cyber attacks on defense-related companies and businesses. Without robust cyber-defense postures, DoD technologies and practices are exposed to hackers, and defense businesses struggle to succeed in the marketplace. Defense businesses cannot succeed in the marketplace without a robust cyber-defense posture and a high risk of DoD technologies and/or practices exposed to hackers. Cyber defense makes these companies more valuable to DoD, and more resilient in the marketplace.
