Commonwealth of Virginia (DD Continuation)

Abstract

The Commonwealth of Virginia continues to work on supporting businesses most impacted by the uncertainty in the federal budget. Being the leading state with more than $36 billion in defense contracts in FY 2016, it is critical that we continue to identify, tack and determine the impacts these companies have faced over the past years of budget turbulence. This grant will provide for an update on the Virginia defense contractor supply chain and compare current status with the benchmark data established in 2012 and 2013. In addition, we will look at the health of Virginia communities which have been dependent on defense contracts to determine which ones are out performing other regions in the Commonwealth. Measure business growth by output, job creation and personal income and compare the defense and non-defense sectors to determine the relevance of each within a region. The purpose of these studies is to identify at both a regional and state level the economic impacts the defense spending has in Virginia. This information would be available to address any questions raised by the military or legislature in the future. The Commonwealth will continue working with the military installations and military communities to address critical issues. In addition, as the Commonwealth continues to address alternative energy sources funding from this grant will support efforts with notification and obtaining input from the DoD Clearing House on these projects.
