Sugar Grove NSGA
Abstract
The Pendleton County Commission requests financial assistance in order to develop a community adjustment and economic diversification plan to respond to the closure of the Lower Base at the Navy Information Operations Command Sugar Grove (NIOCSG). The County Commission recognizes the significant impact that the closure of the Lower Base at NIOCSG has had on the economy of the region. The closure and workforce reduction at the facility provides the region an opportunity to strengthen existing industry with skilled workers and attract new employers to the area. However, if jobs are not available, many of these workers will look outside the region in order to gain employment. Economic development efforts rely heavily on generating employment opportunities and a skilled workforce; therefore, it is critical for the affected communities to work toward the common goal of attracting other employers into the region and retaining these workers.
