Tyndall AFB (JLUS)
Abstract
The Tyndall Air Force Base Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) will focus on promoting compatible community growth around the installation to preserve military capabilities. The goals of this JLUS are to mitigate existing and to prevent future incompatibility issues between base operations and the local communities. Bay County and its Planning and Zoning Division is serving as the JLUS project sponsor. The Cities of Mexico Beach, Callaway, Parker, and Panama City will be key stakeholders represented on the Steering Committee. Primary community compatibility and military issues include: 1) understanding the base, its mission and what the future mission may entail: 2) encroaching urban development in proximity to the military areas of influence, resulting in concerns related to compromised military training; 3) incompatible proposed land use in or around important clear/accident/noise zones in the area; 4) spectrum encroachment and energy compatibility and availability conflicts. Deliverables for this 18-month project include a JLUS Final Report, Draft Zoning Overlay Regulations/Ordinances that promote compatible development, and a formalized process for development coordination.
