Broome County, New York (SPG)

Abstract

In 2011, the property at 600 Main Street and the surrounding area was completely destroyed by flood waters from Tropical Storm Lee. The result of this was the displacement of nearly 1,500 employees from BAE Systems, the sole tenant of the building. Subsequently, BAE requested abandonment and since that time the property has sat vacant. The Air Force has transferred the site to the Broome County Industrial Development Authority. Under this grant the Broome County Industrial Development Agency, New York, intends to complete a detailed feasibility study to identify: • Potential uses of and costs to develop the site; • Management and mitigation of the floodplain and other environmental issues; and • Opportunities to enhance the local tax base and provide job creation. The desired end state of this project will be to enhance economic and business development opportunities for the Village of Johnson City and the Binghamton, New York region.
