Commonwealth of Kentucky
Abstract
Today, the Department of Defense spending in Kentucky totals around $12 Billion annually, representing a sizeable impact to the state. As a result of the military force structure cuts and other legislative actions, the Commonwealth of Kentucky sought funding under this grant. This grant directly leverages of previous work undertaken by the Commonwealth to strengthen the Commonwealth’s defense sector. That previous work involved determining the annual economic impact of the aerospace and defense sector, identifying potential growth areas, assessing education and workforce development issues, developing recommendations for sustained growth, and creating an online interactive data-mapping tool. This grant will now identify actionable growth opportunities in the defense sector, specifically within the unmanned aerial systems and cyber-security sub-sectors, broaden awareness of this industry and to enhance defense manufacturer capacity, including access to quality certifications in order to move defense workers from low-level assembly to high-value production and sales. The expected outcome of this grant is to further expand Kentucky’s position as a leader in engineering and manufacturing excellence. The grant should also contribute to national security goals by helping to preserve, maintain, and expand critical manufacturing technologies and workforce capacities within the Commonwealth for later use by the Department of Defense.
