State of Mississippi (University of Mississippi)
Abstract
Like many other states, Mississippi is dealing with a workforce shortage. Those shortages are evident within the defense manufacturing sector in technical job areas and upper management positions requiring familiarity with skill-sets unique to defense manufacturing. This directly affects the capacity of the state’s defense contractors who work to provide the Department of Defense with the best and most effective products for the warfighter. To respond, the University of Mississippi requested grant assistance to approach their current defense workforce shortage challenge in ways that provide tangible benefits to the defense manufacturing industry in Mississippi. Under this grant, the University will develop a better employee talent pipeline – thereby offering improved efficiency and effectiveness of product development and deployment. Specifically, the University will: • Execute an economic impact study in order to provide a clear picture of the specific/individual geographic areas of highest Defense industry concentration within the state. • Create a Defense Industry Curriculum Council to discuss needs within these geographic areas of the defense industry and assess how education can best meet those needs. • Leverage the council’s perspectives and recommendations to develop curricula for a new graduate program at the Haley Barbour Center for Manufacturing Excellence within the University of Mississippi. These courses will also be made available for undergraduate elective credit. The development of new graduate level will offer defense sector employers a new resource pool of highly qualified employees to response to the unique challenges of the defense manufacturing sector in the state.
