Fort Pickett (JLUS)
Abstract
The Commonwealth of Virginia continues to work with military installations and communities on the most effective ways to address encroachment. There are a significant number of military installations in the Commonwealth. With an understanding that each installation provides critical areas for military training that is essential for units to meet the required readiness levels, it is imperative that the Commonwealth does what it can to influence communities to focus on what are the best methods to protect military training yet sustain compatible economic development. This grant will provide funding to the Commonwealth to contract for a Joint land Use Study for Fort Pickett, one of the premier training site in Virginia. The Fort Pickett JLUS will include the counties of Nottoway, Dinwiddie, Brunswick, and the Town of Blackstone. The Commonwealth of Virginia is the sponsor for this multi-jurisdictional planning effort. The purpose of a JLUS is to promote compatible civilian development patterns near military installations. It relies on community planning and land use authority, where appropriate, to update local general plans and land use regulations that support those plans. The JLUS will identify current and future encroachment sources, including new physical developments and potential natural environmental protection. DoD will benefit from this effort by ensuring the communities, working with the installation, develop a sound viable plan for compatible economic development which will support the training at Ft. Pickett. Even after the Army transferred Ft. Pickett to the Virginia National Guard in the mid-1990’s, the number of units that continue to utilize the installation to maintain their readiness has not decreased.
