Fort Leonard Wood (Force Reduction) Missouri
Abstract
This grant will assist the region in (1) countering the economic impact of personnel reductions at Fort Leonard Wood (FLW) and (2) reducing the region’s economic dependence on FLW. The project will be undertaken by a partnership including the Cities of St. Robert and Waynesville and the Leonard Wood Institute. The Fort Leonard Wood Region includes FLW and the counties of Laclede, Phelps, Pulaski and Texas in Central Missouri. FLW is a major Army training center which supports not only Army but other Service training as well. In August 2017, with OEA funding, a comprehensive study of the impact of personnel reductions at FLW on the region’s economy was completed . The study identified 30 mitigation actions that the region can take to counter the impact and reduce the region’s dependence on FLW. Of the thirty initiatives, there are five that will have significant, long-term impact and for which OEA assistance would be appropriate an needed. These five are (1) sustain the regional momentum to further diversify the regional economy, (2) attract other industries to the region and grow existing ones by better developing the workforce, (3) develop an enhanced regional air services implementation plan, (4) develop external communications/outreach for the region in four business sectors: tourism, military retirees, manufacturing and logistics distribution and (5) support external communication/outreach of the region by developing a master plan for a family of promotional videos to promote industry recruitment, tourism and regional benefits for military retirees.
