Edwards AFB/Consolidated K-12 School Campus Supplement
Abstract
To remedy deficiencies at the schools on Edwards Air Force Base as identified by the Department of Defense’s (DoD) priority list dated July 2011, recent Facility Condition Assessments Reports, and existing gaps in educational facilities based on California Department of Educational recommendations, the Muroc Joint Unified School District (MJUSD) is applying for grant funding from the DoD Public Schools on Military Installations (PSMI) program. MJUSD has considered multiple options to resolve the identified deficiencies and examined them based on educational goals, facility condition, construction costs, and future maintenance and operating expenses. The design solution resolves DoD concerns and current facility limitations by combining modernization and new construction into a comprehensive transitional kindergarten through twelfth grade facility. The construction of select new buildings resolves significant issues that cannot be addressed by modernizing existing campuses separately and allows shared facilities in proximity to all grades. The project is being proposed in two phases: the first phase would address the higher priority transitional kindergarten through sixth grades as indicated on the DoD priority list, and the second phase would address modernization of the junior/senior high school. The second phase will be fully designed and the phase two construction will be executed based on availability of grant funds, the availability of District match, and prioritization of educational goals. The renovated school campus better serves the education needs of up to 1,600 students, of which most are military-connected children thus yielding better retention and quality of life for service and family members enabling the installation to better support DoD warfighters.
