Yuma Proving Ground - planning
Abstract
Yuma County, Arizona will conduct a compatible use study for the Yuma Test Center at the Yuma Proving Ground (YPG). The purpose of the compatible use study is to create a community-driven, cooperative, strategic planning process among YPG, Yuma County, and the surrounding areas to 1) Promote development that is compatible with the military training, testing, and operational missions; and 2) Seek ways to reduce operational impacts on land adjacent to the base. The goal of the compatible use study is to encourage Yuma County to work closely with the installation to implement measures to prevent incompatible civilian development that may impair the continued operational utility of the military installation. YPG is one of the largest military installations in the world. YPG conducts a wide variety of military tests, consisting of nearly every commodity in the ground combat arsenal. The primary mission is to conduct tests on medium and long range artillery, aircraft armament and fire control systems, cargo and personnel airdrop systems, unmanned aerial systems, armored vehicles and automotive equipment and technologies for defeating roadside bombs. YPG is 1,300 square miles in size and controls 2,000 miles of restricted airspace. YPG has the longest overland artillery range in the nation and boasts the DOD’s most highly instrumented helicopter test range and contains over 600 miles of fiber-optic cable to provide instantaneous test data feedback. The specific encroachment concerns are: 1) Power lines in the vicinity of the Yuma Test Center which would reduce the ability to effectively test. 2) Solar power projects and other infrastructure that have reflective materials can create hazards for test pilots and aircrews. 3) The weapons systems, ammunition and vehicles tested can create safety, traffic and noise hazards to any development near Yuma Proving Ground.
