Seymour Johnson AFB CU Grant 2

Abstract

In partnership with Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Dare County Bombing Range, surrounding cities and counties, and other key stakeholders, the North Carolina Department of Commerce request additional technical and financial assistance from the Office of Economic Adjustment in order to perform recommendations identified in the recently completed Compatible Use Study. During this implementation phase, efforts will be focused on (1) Establishing a Compatible Use Implementation Committee; (2) Developing a Memorandum of Agreement for Communications and Protocols between the two military installations and surrounding communities; (3) Update local land use plans and zoning regulations; (4) Establishing a Military Compatibility Area Overlay District for local jurisdictions; and (5) Establish an education and outreach program. These activities are expected to mitigate and prevent incompatibility that could jeopardize realistic training requirements for the F-15E Strike Eagle as well as other military aviation training requirements at Seymour Johnson AFB and Dare County Bombing Range. Further, the grant activities are expected to result in better communications between the military installations and the surrounding communities so that future economic and community growth can continue without jeopardizing the aviation training mission at both military training sites.
