State of Hawaii Industry Resilience Phase II
Abstract
With this project, the State of Hawaii’s (State) Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT) seeks technical and financial assistance from the Department of Defense (DoD) in order to enhance its understanding of the impact of military defense spending within the State, military assets and supporting the Hawaii-based supply chain in order to: sustain and strengthen Hawaii’s military defense industry; diversify the local economy; and build long-term resiliency throughout the community. Impacts of the DoD resulting from the Budget Control Act of 2011 have introduced some uncertainty into the defense supply chain, and the State seeks to understand those impacts and work to mitigate them. Building upon a foundation established in a previous grant, the State of Hawaii will work to: - Upgrade the Hawaii Defense Economy website to improve interface and application, enhance insights and ensure sustainability, as well as refresh data and streamline website functionality; - Develop a comprehensive analysis of strengths, weaknesses, and potential opportunities and threats to key industries that play or could play a major role in Hawaii’s defense economy. This analysis will help to identify military defense sectors and other industries most vulnerable to economic downturns or changes in DoD spending. - Identifying and prioritizing potential areas for economic adjustment and growth to develop subsequent action plans that will strengthen Hawaii’s ability to provide services and commodities to the defense industry and prepare for any potential changes to military defense contracts.
