Edwards AFB/Desert Junior Senior High School Supplement

Abstract

To remedy deficiencies at Desert Jr./Sr. High School at Edwards Air Force Base as identified by the Department of Defense’s (DoD) priority list dated July 2011, recent Facility Condition Assessments Reports, and existing gaps in educational facilities based on California Department of Educational recommendations, the Muroc Joint Unified School District (MJUSD) is applying for grant funding from the DoD Public Schools on Military Installations (PSMI) program. MJUSD has considered multiple options to resolve the identified deficiencies and examined them based on educational goals, facility condition, construction costs, and future maintenance and operating expenses. The design solution resolves DoD concerns and current facility limitations by combining modernization and new construction for the seventh through twelfth grade facilities. The construction of select new buildings resolves significant issues that cannot be addressed by only modernizing existing the buildings and allows for construction of select facilities that can be utilized across all grades. This is the second phase of a comprehensive TK-12 project that will address the modernization and new construction of the junior/senior high school. The first phase is which is currently under construction included select shared use facilities and the design to support the high school construction. The design is now complete and approved by California Division of Sate Architects. And the district has secured sufficient match and is requesting the federal assistance to proceed with phase II construction of the high school. . The renovated school campus better serves the education needs of up to 720 junior and senior high school students, of which most are military-connected children thus yielding better recruitment, retention, and quality of life for service and family members enabling the installation to better support DoD warfighters.
