Eielson Realignment - Implementation 2

Abstract

The Fairbanks North Star Borough is preparing to welcome two squadrons of F-35A Lightning IIs to Eielson Air Force Base starting in 2020. This expansion is expected to bring approximately 1,300 active duty personnel and their families to interior Alaska. Most growth related to the Eielson expansion is expected to occur in what is already the fastest-growing area of the borough. With support from the Office of Economic Adjustment, the borough has completed two studies to assess community preparedness for the expansion, identify gaps, and help plan for growth – the Eielson Regional Growth Plan (2018) and the Salcha-Badger Road Area Plan (2019). This proposal seeks support to implement key recommendations from those two plans, specifically to complete 1) a land suitability analysis to aid in a variety of land-use planning efforts, 2) an update to the borough’s comprehensive roads plan, and 3) an update to the comprehensive recreational trails plan.
