Camp Williams
Abstract
The Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG) is serving as the sponsor for the Camp Williams -Traverse Mountain Regional Study which is a Compatibility Use Study in partnership with Camp Williams, the cities of Lehi, Saratoga Springs, Eagle Mountain, Herriman, and Bluffdale as well as Salt Lake County and Utah County. It will also include stakeholder participation from the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the National Security Agency (NSA), Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration, Wasatch Front Regional Council, local developers, local land owners, and others. Since Camp Williams is such an important training facility, it is imperative that good planning does what it can to influence communities to focus on the best methods to protect military training and installation resilience while sustaining compatible economic development. The Study represents a community-driven planning process involving Camp Williams and the communities to: -Increase the understanding of partner concerns. -Collaboratively develop a strategic community land use plan. -Promote community development that is compatible with the military training activities and minimizes effects of development on operations. -Where appropriate, update local general plans and land use regulations that support those plans. -Identify current and future encroachment sources that threaten military resilience, including new physical developments and potential natural environmental protection. -Identify protection measures for the West Traverse Sentinel landscape. The Study area comprises a two to three and a half mile area around the boundaries of the installation (depending on the direction) and encompasses approximately 135 square miles (see attached map). Compatibility concerns include security (physical, cyber, airspace, and infrastructure), transportation, connectivity, gate locations, transit, active transportation, wildfire management, airspace and land restrictions (including noise and vibration, light, wind energy, cellular towers, and frequency spectrum), water resources, public trespassing, wildlife, West Traverse Sentinel landscape, urban development, infrastructure, and commercial unmanned aircraft systems. The proposed 18 month Compatibility Use Study project will include the following deliverables: Final Camp Williams -Traverse Mountain Regional Study report with implementation recommendations, executive summary, and a public internet based mapping portal.
