State of New Mexico Cybersecurity
Abstract
New Mexico Economic Development (NMEDD) staff and partners will work together to conduct a Photonics Industry Cybersecurity Gap Analysis for Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) with the assistance of the NM CCoE (Cybersecurity Center of Excellence) and NM MEP (Manufacturing Extension Partnership). New Mexico is a hub for optics and photonics technology companies due in part for their need in defense applications in New Mexico’s two Department of Energy labs and Department of Defense laboratory. Photonics is the study and manipulation of light that is used for optical technologies, such as detectors, lasers, sensors, and satellite imaging systems. A recent study by a New Space New Mexico Report in 2019 cited the DoD Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) spends $276M contracts in New Mexico. The AFRL depends on emerging areas of optics and photonics technology to support their work in directed energy research, and development for space applications and their use in combat. The Albuquerque Journal newspaper in 2015 cited Applied Technology Associates as an example of a company with depends on contracts with the Air Force Research Laboratory and generates over $45 million dollars in revenue. Companies leading in innovation and technology are the most vulnerable to cybersecurity breaches that threaten national security and critical infrastructure. By providing resources to address identified challenges and weakness NMEDD will help these companies meet new cybersecurity requirements for businesses in the defense-supply chain. Helping and making it easier from small and medium sized businesses in New Mexico to comply with new cybersecurity guidelines will make it easier for defense contractors to locate local suppliers.
