Avon Park AFR - CU - Grant 4

Abstract

The Avon Park Air Force Range (AFR) is located in a continuously developing, transitioning rural area with expanding urban areas to the north, west, and south. These traditionally rural agricultural counties are experiencing persistent urban and suburban development. Between 2010 and 2019 the population in the four counties surrounded by Avon Park AFR grew by 19.5%, exceeding the Florida growth rate by almost 7%. The Avon Park AFR Compatible Use Plan brings forth an effort between affected local governments and Avon Park AFR to update data and analysis to reinforce adoption and implementation of compatible development measures designed to prevent urban encroachment; safeguard the military mission; and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. The Central Florida Regional Planning Council will work with the seven affected local governments and the Avon Park AFR to address goals of encroachment prevention.
