Alabama Defense Manufacturing Community
Abstract
Advanced manufacturing technologies are critical to U.S. defense weapon system modernization and the successful scaling of emerging technologies. The increasing complexity and performance requirements of weapon systems require advanced materials and methods of manufacturing, sophisticated software, and more robust cybersecurity. The Alabama Defense Advanced Manufacturing Community (ADAMC) is a 22-county region that provides the necessary defense industrial base for advanced manufacturing technologies that enable advancement of the aviation, missile, and ground vehicle systems critical to the nation’s defense manufacturing infrastructure. Three national aspects are currently lacking: 1) meeting the advanced manufacturing demand, 2) efficient technology advancement and knowledge sharing, and 3) comprehensive education and workforce development. To meet defense industrial base needs, the ADAMC consortium leverages its concentration of manufacturers, workforce development resources, research and development facilities, academia, and DoD installations to meet the demand for advanced manufacturing from DoD and other federal. The grant will result in 1) the engagement of industry, academia, and local/state organizations in research initiatives to identify needs, gaps and barriers to effective workforce development and technology adoption; 2) the initial operation of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Integration Center (AMIIC) facility; 3) pilot technology adoption and advancement programs with industry; and 4) development and enhancement of new and existing education and workforce development programs.
