The AIM Higher Consortium of Greater Pittsburgh/WV

Abstract

With a manufacturing base of steel and metals that helped forge the “arsenal of democracy”, the Greater Pittsburgh / southwestern PA area, together with northern WV have been part of a well-integrated industrial and manufacturing ecosystem for many decades. Now, the region is at the forefront of integrating metals and advanced materials with Artificial Intelligence, robotics, and additive manufacturing to produce new innovations and manufacturing capacity that can meet critical Department of Defense needs. Led by non-profit Catalyst Connection, and integrated with two Defense Manufacturing USA Institutes (ARM Institute and American Makes), the 30-entity partnership has been designated as a Defense Manufacturing Community by the Department of Defense. Under the designation, this consortium will continue to enhance this well-established defense manufacturing ecosystem. Activities under this project include implementing strategies to promote a research & innovation agenda, provision of technical assistance to firms in the defense supply chain, connecting industry needs with workforce development and training resources, and providing access to capital for this growth.
