Connecticut Digital Model Initiative

Abstract

The Connecticut Digital Model Initiative is Connecticut s defense manufacturing consortium designated as a DoD Defense Manufacturing Community in 2020 to implement a coordinated initiative assisting small and medium sized DoD suppliers adopt and transition to Model Based Definition (MBD) technologies. This approach aims to shorten lead-times, improve product quality and reduce costs, as outlined in both the 2018 National Defense Strategy and the 2018 Assessing and Strengthening the Manufacturing and Defense Industrial Base and Supply Chain Resiliency of the United States report. This project will undertake a pilot program to introduce the representative suppliers to MBD technologies and methods, with a long-term goal of facilitating larger integration among upwards of 700 defense suppliers through lessons learned from the initial pilot program. The Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) will work with our project and industry partners to develop a 24-month pilot program that will work with supply chain companies from each Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) supply chain to learn about, integrate, and fully transition to MBD. Lessons learned will be used to build a “Digital Playbook”, which will contain the educational and technical principles necessary for wider adoption by the State’s upwards of 700 defense supply chain companies. CT Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) will lead the technical efforts of the project to introduce MBD capability in the designated suppliers. CONNSTEP, Inc. will conduct assessments and feedback synthesis to build out the actual Digital Playbook. Cenral Connecticut State University (CCSU) and MxD will lead efforts on transformational skills and roles definitions needed to align with the technology and business outcomes.
