Utah Defense Manufacturing Community
Abstract
The State of Utah, led by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) with the Utah Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Initiative (UAMMI), formed the Utah Defense Manufacturing Community (UDMC) to support and sustain the United States military by enhancing and growing the regional defense manufacturing industry. The Utah defense manufacturing community plays a critical role in the defense industry ecosystem. As a designated Defense Manufacturing Community, UMDC will leverage the state’s robust aerospace and defense and composite manufacturing industries and implement an integrated strategy to support the regional defense innovation ecosystem, focusing on carbon composites and advanced materials. The designation enables integration and expansion of successful programs and introduces new offerings to prepare for the future of defense manufacturing by creating a single integrated program incorporating a four-pillar approach: 1) Workforce, 2) Supply Chain, 3) Research; 4) Small Business & Incubators. Pillar 1, Workforce, will support Utah’s defense manufacturing community by collaborating with the defense community and academia address the labor shortages within the defense manufacturing industry by creating defense industry specific training, coursework, and Bachelor and Master degree programs, expanding pathway and apprenticeship programs, expanding K-12 , STEM, and diversity outreach, and outreach for an Advanced Composite Materials and Structures Center. Pillar 2, Supply Chain, focuses on increase collaboration within the defense manufacturing community, developing a plan to reshore Utah companies, and creating a plan to create a Utah Center of Excellence for testing and qualifying advanced materials for use in USAF aircraft. Pillar 3, Research, fosters collaboration among Utah defense manufacturing research programs and defense research programs, including outreach, creating a plan to match research grants with applicants, and developing a business plan for a carbon to carbon fiber production plant. Pillar 4, Small Business and Incubators, will support small businesses by enhancing supply chain opportunities and providing innovation and rapid development of new products by increasing by increasing outreach to veteran-owned businesses, federal research and technology, and advanced materials innovation.
