State of Illinois Phase 3
Abstract
Illinois has deep ties to DOD and the Defense Industrial Base. A significant number of companies (manufacturing; construction; aerospace; professional, scientific, and technical services; administrative support; and advanced business services) perform major Department of Defense (DOD) work. The state has a strong manufacturing sector, representing the single largest share of the state?s Gross State Product, making up more than 2% of the state GDP. Defense contractors in the state receive more than $10.0 billion from DOD contracts. Some 1700 establishments in the region have at least one defense contract. The amount of DOD sales performed in the region averages approximately $6 billion annually, and some 25,000 jobs are directly supported with DOD sales. Close to 80% of defense contracting work in the state is performed by companies in the IDN Region (Chicago, Quad Cities, Rockford & Peoria). The defense industry in the region is very important to DoD, and the work of the IDN team is intended to maintain and enhance the value of the sector to DOD, and to ensure that the Defense Industrial Base in the state continues to be resilient. The project team will continue the cybersecurity assessment work started in Phase II and take it to the next level of improved cyber readiness; workforce development efforts will be enhanced to meet defense manufacturers? skilled labor force needs; and the resiliency of the defense supply chain will be enhanced through the introduction of innovation and technology. Addressing these key challenges will make defense contractors and subs in the state more resilient and strengthen the DoD supply chain while also directly contributing to a more robust state and local economy. The UIC Voorhees center will maintain, update, and enhance the Illinois Defense Supply Chain Mapping Tool; it will also conduct relevant research to support the efforts outlined in this proposal.
