NSF Indian Head - MIR

Abstract

Charles County, Maryland, in partnership with the University of Maryland?s Center for Global Sustainability, is preparing a Military Installation Resilience Review for the Naval Support Facility Indian Head (NSFIH). Through this Review process, community and NSFIH leaders will assess the risks of climate change, including the impacts from extreme weather events, to the region?s critical infrastructure systems. The Review will be a cooperative and strategic effort between Charles County, the Town of Indian Head, NSFIH, and the University of Maryland, with the guidance and assistance of the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC). This project will specifically address two core installation goals: preserving and protecting the public health, safety, and general welfare of those living near an active military installation; and, protecting and preserving military readiness and defense capabilities while supporting continued community economic development. The Review project team will engage leading climate change, DoD readiness, and economic development experts. These experts will work in direct partnership with community leaders from Charles County, NSFIH, and the Town of Indian Head to produce a clear plan of action to achieve installation and community goals. The plan will include a financing strategy, which will detail the fiscal resources necessary to bring the resilience and sustainability planning efforts to fruition. This 18-month project will launch in early 2021; a final report will be delivered to leadership in July 2022.
