State of Florida IR - Defense Portal
Abstract
Fluctuations in defense spending going back to 2011, and continuing up to the flat line defense budget in 2021, have created vulnerability in Florida?s defense sector. The lack of predictability in the federal defense budget make it difficult to plan and invest at the small and mid-sized company level because these companies do not know if today?s defense contract will be there tomorrow. This disincentive to bidding on defense work serves to weaken the defense industrial base as manufacturers seek more predictability in their business cycle. Part of a solution for this challenge lies in making more robust data available to Florida?s defense manufacturers. Under this grant award, the State of Florida will create a web portal to provide businesses in Florida?s defense industrial base the ability to further develop and strengthen their supply chain and seek out defense contracting opportunities at both the state and national levels. This web portal will open new business opportunities for both traditionally defense-related businesses and create a framework for Florida businesses to communicate and collaborate. Specifically, the portal will be used to identify vendors and suppliers in Florida who either currently contract with the DOD or wish to grow or expand their businesses as a part of the nation?s defense supply chain. The Portal will be a resource to Florida?s businesses, while also strengthening economic opportunities and prosperity by allowing companies to see areas to expand their businesses or collaborate on ongoing projects.
