Commonwealth of Massachusetts - UMass Lowell Phase III

Abstract

As a state with the tenth-largest amount of defense contracting activity in the nation (according to the FY19 Defense Spending By State Report), Massachusetts and its corresponding defense supply chain, are particularly reliant on defense spending. Additionally, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic created widespread concern and economic hardship across the state, to include severe impacts in the state s aerospace and defense industry. To ensure resilience in the supply chain in this environment, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, via the University of Massachusetts Lowell Research Institute, will continue implementing and expanding a plan that was developed with OLDCC funding from a previous State (UMass Lowell and MassDevelopment) grant. UMass Lowell will continue implementing a series of activities at its SBIR Center of Excellence to strengthen the ability of non-traditional, innovation-based companies to understand and respond to emerging challenges. The refinement of a strategic plan for the UMass Lowell Research Institute will continue to prioritize strong links between State entities, military installations/missions, and the Commonwealth s workforce needs.
