Fort Benning - CU
Abstract
This project will engage eight counties in Georgia and Alabama in a local and regional collaborative planning exercise to develop innovative approaches and strategies to limit incompatible development in the vicinity of Fort Benning. This planning exercise will build on and update the Implementation components of the 2008 Fort Benning Joint Land Use Study, and it will focus on developing non-regulatory approaches to implementing compatible use development policies in strategic and sensitive areas around the Installation. The strategies and approaches promoted in this plan will emphasize community involvement and collaboration with Fort Benning to develop programs that will protect areas vital to furthering the Installation?s military missions while also promoting economic and social vitality in the participating communities and in the region as a whole. In addition, the strategies and approaches employed will be supported by robust analyses of the impacts of limiting development in these areas and the feasibility of economic development programs based around land and natural resource protection in these areas. The project team will work with the communities, the Installation, and the numerous state, federal, private sector, and NGO stakeholders in the region to develop these strategies through an intensive public engagement process, and will work with identified community partners to implement short-term and mid-term projects and initiatives described in the plan. The result of this effort will be an active program of land protection to limit incompatible development around Fort Benning and a deeper partnership and collaboration between the Installation, the surrounding communities, and the region as a whole.
