Portsmouth NS Compatible Use 3

Abstract

Southern Maine Regional Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC) has partnered with the Town of Kittery and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS) to conduct a third phase of implementation activities for a Compatible Use (CU) Implementation Grant. The grant will continue to implement recommendations from the original 2019 Joint Land Use Study. In particular, the goals of this phase are to help manage the flow of workers to and from PNS by designing and identifying funding sources for a microtransit service and developing conceptual designs for transportation hubs. The grant will assess the region s current housing crisis and design strategies to improve and expand the variety of housing options within an easy commute of the base or with easy access to transit, and convene a standing committee to improve communications between the base, the town and other regional stakeholders. Key installation resilience challenges caused by increased flooding and impacts of severe weather will be addressed through the Kittery Climate Action Plan and other climate related activities conducted through this grant. The CU Implementation effort is focused around PNS and Kittery, with consideration of Southern York County in Maine and the Portsmouth, New Hampshire area.
