State of Maryland - Diversification

Abstract

The State of Maryland is diversifying its statewide economy with a goal of minimizing impacts on the state’s economy and military communities caused by Department of Defense spending fluctuations, supply chain challenges from the COVID19, and other potential future threats that the nation’s supply chain faces. Specific emphasis will be made to target outreach in these defense dependent counties: Anne Arundel County, Charles County, Frederick County, Harford County, Prince George’s County, Queen Anne’s County, and St. Mary’s County. To accomplish this goal, Maryland’s economic development agency, the Maryland Department of Commerce, and the state’s technology development corporation, Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO), are partnering to expand Maryland’s federal technology transfer program, the Defense Technology Commercialization (DefTech) Center, aimed at providing Maryland businesses with new commercialization opportunities by accessing resources from federal labs. The DefTech Center program supports 45 businesses with technology transfer and commercialization opportunities, with an anticipated impact of facilitating at least six technology transfer agreements between labs and members. These efforts also support training 125 federal lab researchers on the benefits of working with businesses on technology and product development.
