Hot Springs Army-Navy Hospital Fire and Protection Services

Abstract

On December 22, 2023, Congress enacted the National Defense Authorization Act of 2024. Section 2852 of the Act authorized the Department of Defense to make grants for security and fire protection for the “former Army and Navy General Hospital, Hot Springs National Park, Hot Springs, Arkansas”. Subsection (a) allows the Secretary of Defense, acting through the Director of the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation to expend up to $2,750,000 of funds appropriated to assist the State of Arkansas to provide security services and fire protection services for the for the former Army Navy Hospital property. Completion of this project is necessary for protection of the health, welfare, and safety of the public and property. Repairing the fire suppression system will reduce the risk of a fire on the Army Navy Hospital property and the risk of a fire spreading to the surrounding Hot Springs National Park and the City of Hot Springs. A fire on the Army Navy Hospital property would create a significant risk of environmental damage. By installing an upgraded security system and providing a secure fence line, the public can be kept from the site and lessen the risk of damages from unauthorized use of the area. Continuing a security presence will ensure those safety measures remain effective.
