Detroit Arsenal IR - Grant 2

Abstract

The Macomb County Defense Corridor in southeastern Michigan houses critical military installations, including US Army Garrison Detroit Arsenal and Selfridge Air National Guard Base, as well as vital industries that support the Defense operations. Recent flooding events in 2014 and 2021 highlighted the vulnerability of this region, prompting the need for a comprehensive assessment to enhance flood resilience and ensure the continued functionality of these essential assets. The key objectives of this project are to conduct a comprehensive flood risk assessment to identify vulnerabilities in the Red Run Drain watershed and its impact on the Macomb and Oakland Counties, develop detailed hydrologic and hydraulic models to simulate flood scenarios and assess the effectiveness of potential resilience measures, and collaborate with stakeholders, including federal, state and local government agencies, industry representatives, academic institutions, and community organizations, to ensure a holistic approach to flood resilience. Anticipated outcomes include a comprehensive understanding of flood risks in the Red Run Drain watershed, improved coordination among key stakeholders, and a prioritized set of resilience actions and infrastructure improvement recommendations that can be implemented to safeguard the region s critical assets.
