INVESTIGATION OF LEADING INDICATORS FOR SYSTEMS ENGINEERING EFFECTIVENESS IN MODEL-CENTRIC PROGRAMS

Abstract

This research will be led by Dr. Donna H. Rhodes, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a principal research scientist and director of the Systems Engineering Advancement Research Initiative (SEAri) within the MIT Sociotechnical Systems Research Center. Acquisition programs increasingly use model-centric approaches, generating and using digital assets throughout the lifecycle. As systems engineering transforms, this is resulting in new digital artifacts, revised processes and frequent reviews using models rather than documents. Accordingly, how we measure engineering effectiveness must evolve. Prior research transformed lagging engineering metrics to systems engineering leading indicators. The current set of leading indicators, however, is predicated on traditional systems engineering practice, with use of document-driven processes and major milestone reviews. This research aims to adapt and extend leading indicators for digital model-based engineering.
