BARRY GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP AND EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION PROGRAM

Abstract

To help ensure the Nation’s global competitiveness and security, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship Foundation (BGSF) and the National Defense Education Program (NDEP) are partnering to identify, encourage and support this Nation’s next generation of leaders in science, engineering and mathematics research. The Foundation and NDEP share a mission of fostering scientific talent by providing scholarships that, in addition to encouraging classroom excellence, promote the involvement of undergraduates in cutting-edge, faculty-mentored scientific, engineering and mathematics research. With funding support from NDEP, the Goldwater Foundation will utilize its network of approximately 1,800 campus representatives to increase the number of scholarships it annually awards to college sophomores and juniors from 240 to 480 awards for each of the next five years, increasing the total number of awards over the five-year period from approximately 1200 to 2400. As over 50% of today’s research and development funding goes to support defense-related projects, the workforce development supported by NDEP is critical to the mission of the Defense Department.
