Dietary Supplement Products and Ingredients Promoted for Immune Health and Resilience

Abstract

The general public has increased their use of dietary supplements since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dietary ingredients and botanical supplements that mediate immune function toward disease prevention, health maintenance, and resilience outcomes, with claims to boost the immune system, are emerging in new products as well as previously marketed products. As a result, there has been an increase in public inquiries related to immune benefits and risks of using such products. The public purpose of this award is to strengthen the knowledge and understanding of dietary supplements in order to improve the ability to respond to public inquiries about the benefits or harms of such ingredients. The objective of the proposed project is to evaluate the evidence of dietary supplement products and ingredients that have market claims related to immune function and perform analyses of ingredients in select products to determine whether product labels and claims are accurate. This will benefit the public by improving the understanding of these products, ingredients and claims [benefits and harms]; improve the ability to respond to public inquiries; and allow for the use of the evidence to inform strategic decisions regarding future research initiatives, based on the science.
