Cyber: A Methodology to Protect Classified Technical Documents: The Diagram Modification Approach

Abstract

PROJECT ABSTRACT In today cyberspace communication, information is shared, circulated, stored, stolen, generated in digital forms. These pieces of digital information form digital documents and stored in various places such as computer memories, or storage devices. These pieces of digital information (digital documents) if they are valuable or classified then become targets of attacks from hackers, digital adversaries and others. Thus, in this proposal we will study of an important issue related to the protection of classified real technical documents that are vulnerable of theft through “valid” alternations. Note that these technical documents are composed from two main parts: the text and the diagrams. We will work on the protection of digital diagrams here. Initially we address this problem and the reasons to protect classified technical documents. Then we present a strategy to partition the problem into a sequence of doable tasks and propose a methodology for the implementation of each task. The robust and secure protection of technical documents requires a thorough and long time study and implementation in various phases. Thus, for the phase I of this 3-year project we plan to conduct research on a sequence of six series doable tasks that deal with the protection of digital diagrams. These tasks are: Extraction of Digital Logic Diagrams from Technical Documents; Automatic and hierarchical recognition/understanding of Digital Diagrams by converting them into SPN graphs; Automatic and logically standing modifications of these SPN graphs based on the functional context of the diagram (Local and Global); Functional comparison of the modified diagrams with the original diagram at the SPN functional level; Reconverting the modified SPN graphs into new Digital Logic Diagrams; Generating a variety of modified technical documents by embedding the modified new Digital diagrams;
