Acoustic Color Quality Assessment (ACQUA)

Abstract

Short Work Statement: The proposed program is a collaborative effort between ARL/PSU and GTRI which will investigate the influence of aperture phase error on the quality of the acoustic color. The investigation will also include other effects that degrade the quality of acoustic color, including uncompensated motion error, burial state, and seafloor sediment characteristics. Specific tasks will focus on (1) characterizing the phase error effects on acoustic color and deriving analytical solutions describing the impact of phase error; (2) the development of quality metrics and conducting a sensitivity analysis of physical mechanisms as a cause of phase errors affecting acoustic color; (3) examining the impact of acoustic color quality on classification and automatic target recognition (ATR) performance. Both simulated and real data will be used in the analysis.
