Circulator in Aperture
Abstract
Abstract Circulator In Aperture – CIA University of Colorado Boulder (UCB), specifically the Antenna Research Group (ARG), proposes research, development, and demonstration of a NEW concept in transceiver front-end architectures, named Circulator In Aperture (CIA), where the aperture simultaneously functions as antenna and circulator. CIA eliminates serious shortcomings associated with both, wideband antennas (very high return loss and power handling), and circulators (isolation, bandwidth, and power handling) in conventional RF front-end architectures when the full duplex operation is desired over wide frequency bandwidth with high transmit powers. The CIA shell demonstrate several orders of magnitude improved composite bandwidth, isolation, and power handling than the current state of the art front-ends. Low-profile, weight, and cost configurations operating over multi-octave bandwidths with effective radiated power (ERP) over 1kW and isolation between the transmitting and receiving channels exceeding 55dB are envisioned. This research has potential to dramatically impact future implementations of RF electronic warfare (EW) frontends by allowing them to be used for many different purposes. The CIA program shell be conducted in two parallel tracks, specifically, Single Aperture Front-Ends (SAFE) and Array- Based Broadband Architectures (ABBA). The CIA program shell result in peer-reviewed research publications, patents, two PhD dissertations and one MSc thesis.
