Toward a Neural Model of Human Skill Learning
Abstract
Fitts and Posner in 1967 outlined a theory of skill learning that is almost 5decaded is the standard theory to guide the development of training. According to this theory skills are acquired in three stages. The first stage was a cognitive and involved the conscious evaluation of strategies for the solution of the problem and the building of a goal tree of hierarchy of goal states. The second stage was associative and involved connecting the strategies in to the overall solution. The third stage was autonomous and in involves practice to achieve a highly effective program to execute the skill.
