2015 International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine (IAAAM) Conference

Abstract

ABSTRACT 2015 International Association of Aquatic Animal Medicine (IAAAM) Conference ONRBAA15-001 The International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine (IAAAM) was founded in 1969 by 12 individuals who recognized the value of collaboration. From its inception, the purpose of the organization was to foster the free exchange of scientific information related to aquatic animal medicine. With its present membership of 360 professionals, dedicated to the practice of aquatic animal medicine, teaching and research in aquatic animal medicine or aquatic animal husbandry and management, IAAAM remains committed to this mission. The 46th Annual IAAAM Conference: Our Waters Our World, hosted by Shedd Aquarium, will be held in Chicago, Illinois from Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10, 2015. Conference events will take place at Shedd Aquarium, the Swiss™tel (the hotel venue), and the Brookfield Zoo. With Chicago as a central and desirable location and following on the success of the 2014 meeting in Australia, IAAAM anticipates a well-attended 46th annual meeting. While the IAAAM has a membership base of approximately 360 individuals, attendance at the annual scientific conference regularly exceeds 400, as the event attracts a significant number of additional interested students and professionals. The conference is open and accessible to all interested individuals including minorities, women, and persons with disabilities; attendees do not need to be IAAAM members. IAAAM members convene annually for a scientific conference to present and discuss their work in the field of aquatic animal medicine, husbandry or management during the prior calendar year. The meeting format comprises a series of presentations given to the entire conference group by a variety of guest speakers. In addition, there is a poster session presentation during one evening of the conference. All presentations are captured in abstract format, and the abstracts are published as a proceeding by the IAAAM. This year all oral and poster presentations will be video documented and available to conference attendees. The 2015 IAAAM Conference theme is Our Waters Our World. Topic discussions at the conference will revolve around the shared responsibility for the care and understanding of aquatic animals throughout the world. The conference program and agenda is still being developed. However, there will be a dedicated session, chaired by a Navy employee of the United States Navy Marine Mammal Program, featuring ONR sponsored work products. Relevant to the Office of Naval Research, many participants and topic presenters at the IAAAM conference have either received support from ONR or produce an outcome of interest to ONR program managers. All clinical veterinarians who provide health care to the United States NavyÕs working marine mammals are members of IAAAM, and many of them will be presenting at the 2015 conference. In addition, multiple allied scientists, researching important questions that involve the NavyÕs working marine mammals and the impact of integration fleet supporting technologies, plan to attend the 2015 meeting. The total expected cost of the meeting is still being calculated as the conference program develops. We anticipate the entire program budget to be over $166,681. The budget covers conference expenses including: equipment and facility rental user fees, travel, conference food and beverage, entertainment, signage and promotional items, and event staffing. A grant of $10,000 towards the 2015 IAAAM conference would offset anticipated costs for audiovisual meeting support that will exceed $5,500 and access to Wi-Fi connectivity for meeting attendees which will exceed $5,000. For more information about the anticipated conference budget, please find the budget justification attached.
